JERSEY CITY, N.J., April 24, 2012 – Workers have accelerated excavation activities and are preparing the Garfield Avenue Site for a full-scale cleanup scheduled to begin later this year.

Since early March, crews have been digging up and hauling away chromium-impacted soil and debris from a portion of the former Morris Canal on the northwestern side of the site. The goal is to make substantial progress removing highly contaminated soils from this area by midsummer.

Meanwhile, workers have installed metal sheeting at locations throughout the cleanup site, which will enable PPG to expand the scope of the excavation in the second half of the year. Consisting of interlocking one-third-inch steel that is approximately 2 feet wide and nearly 60 feet tall, the sheeting was driven into the soil to support the sidewalls of excavations. More than 100 sheets were installed from mid-January to mid-March.

Meanwhile, installation of an on-site water treatment facility is complete. The system enables PPG to decontaminate chromium-impacted water that infiltrates the excavation from groundwater sources and safely send it via pipe to the local sewer. This eliminates the need for as many as 10 trucks a day to haul away chromium-impacted water. As a result, PPG’s streamlined water management will enable the company to more than double the rate at which it digs up and hauls away chromium-impacted soil and debris.
